Quest for the Holy Grail - The Hydrogen Messiah

In the New Humanity (April-May, 1996, Year 22, No.128), I stated, "The moment a new energy is found that is utterly benevolent, universally plentiful and hugely powerful, with no harmful by-products, we will enter a phase so magnificent that it would be as if all the world's many saviours had returned at once!" When on February 24th, 1996, James and Traeger and myself, as part of a small group, had visited the huge and extensive JET (Joint European Torus Project) laboratories in Abingdon, Oxfordshire, this was a pilgrimage to honour the great technical and creative genius of the European Union. At that time it was anticipated that by 1999 the JET facility's mission to create unending, cheap fusion energy would be completed, by which time a larger experimental station will be on its way, the ITER project (International Experimental Thermonuclear Reactor), involving The European Union as well as the USA, Japan and Russia, and that following ITER there will be a final, pre-production prototype, with the ability to produce electrical power, planned for operation by the year 2025.

Furthermore, as the JET principle uses low density 'plasma' reactions to fuse types of hydrogen together, producing large amounts of energy (the energy of the sun) in the process, it is very much safer than the conventional fission nuclear power in use today. Unlike fission reactors, which use large quantities of dangerous and long-lived radioactive elements, a fusion power station will safely produce vast quantities of power without significant long-term risk to the environment. The added bonus is that the raw materials for the fuel station, namely hydrogen and lithium, are widely available. In 1999, what is next?

The Next Stage

In the European Voice of 14-20 January 1999 (A weekly 'View of the Union Newspaper'), I read quite by so-called chance that "The EU committed itself to four more years in search of the energy equivalent of the Holy Grail when it agreed an E 788 million budget for research on nuclear fusion last month ... The EU-level fusion strategy appeared to be in doubt after the US announced plans to pull out of a key collaborative project aimed at building a test bed for a working reactor, in the summer, on the grounds that the research was too costly. But Russia and Japan will carry on with the scaled-back International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) project."

It will take up to the magic year of 2012 for a full demonstration reactor to go on stream for the production of electricity. By the times the first commercial reactors are built by 2025 we could all be luxuriating in the new, plentiful, endless energy at hand in a changed world.

Fusion Energy and Pneumatocracy - The Parallel

I see a parallel between the development of fusion energy and the emergence of Pneumatocracy; the one for our material needs and the other for our spiritual ones. The two can intertwine, to be useful for eternity, and fully underpin a brand new humanity in the making - a planetary race, one might surmise, for sometime in the distant future.

Whatever the future may hold, the creation of fusion energy and the emergence of Pneumatocracy is being hastened, right now; the one with a further E 788 million budget, the other with slender financial resources. But since spiritual wealth is available in abundance, the act of inspiriting and ensouling the world, anywhere, will be achieved at a fraction of the cost, yet will be of the highest significance in our daily lives.

Thus in parallel with fusion energy Pneumatocracy (the Rule of the Soul and Spirit in the individual as well as in society as a whole) will be ready for a greater impact by 2002 so that from

2012-2125 it too stands available for full application in all fields of human endeavour to lift up our spirits and light up our environment. What is for the long-term needs careful nurturing. I am not in the least concerned that I may not witness the full flowering after 2034, when my centenary is celebrated, or at least remembered by some. It is after all the legacy for future generations which matters most of all, for which energy, application and ingenuity are expended today. I was also thinking of James's son, Maximilian Benjamin who was born in September 1998 from the blessed union of him and Gillie, who will still be but a youngish man by 2065. He could easily stay on earth until the end of the century if not break into the 22nd one, at a time when extreme longevity will be more common.

To that generation, as well as to anyone today, I say, 'Know thyself and do more'. As for my own state of mind, I am in harmony with myself and the universe, while filled with bliss and in rapport with the unending cosmos. These attributes act as my aegis, my shield, so that I can move forward, onward and outward, most joyfully, without encumbrance into whatever the next stage of the Luminous Journey will offer me.
